I enjoy writing it because it's natural to think and feel about sex. Writing about it helps me develop a healthy understanding of it. Exploring it makes me more knowledgeable of it. The more knowledgeable I am, the better I'll be at writing it. The better I am at writing it, the more people who'll buy it and the less closer I am to being someone else's punk.

Woooo~! Look at this dusty thread!! I'm just gonna *grabs a swiffer* there!

I'm actually curious about out newer members and their thoughts on this ♡

As for myself, I spent the greater part of my teens binging romance novels in multiple genres so yes, I have a soft spot for smut. Do I care for it all the time? No. Simply because it's the plot and the characters that drive an rp for me. Smut is just a plus, especially if the chemistry is there between the characters and of course your partner. Having solid friendships with your partners really drives the smut home and it makes it that much more wholesome for the characters ♡

Now don't get me wrong, I've done a lot of senseless smut just cuz. Sometimes that's my sweetooth showing ^^ and I'm quite open to trying new kinks ... cuz I live to torture my characters xD

Metal, I definitely agree with everything that you wrote.

A bit of backstory here, but I have been writing stories since I was 11 years old and it was all young adult-style stories and stories that would never have any real smut content. Many years later, I wanted to start writing more adult-themed stories and that's how I got into RPing, to build my craft.

Having smut in the story is, for me, important but it should not dominate the overall plot. Man meets woman, they date, they fall in love, and they make love... that's kind of the format I created years ago. Now, in my current story, I incorporate some drama and other relationships (or cheating) but those smut-related scenes only help in the grand scheme of the story.

There has to be that level of respect and contentment with your characters and that will only make the smut more beautiful. The type of kinks, whether harsh or not, should really be used only if it fits.

If smut overshadows story, then that's a conversation between writing partners! At least, that's how I look at it!

I quite enjoy writing erotica into my stories. I'v had a few issues with some partners taking that to mean all the sex all the time, but I find a balance of it in a good dramatic tale is quite fun and enhances the story. I do like to pull the plug and write one-off smut in various situations with various characters, but I then usually incorporate that into the character's profile/background at some point after it is done. Anyway, I'm rambling here...

You gotta put your foot down and be like "hey, smut gotta be natural for this to work" and make some clear boundaries. I've also had my issues with people taking advantage like that.

A lot of times I run into the problem that it takes so long for smut to develop naturally that it actually never happens, and I'm left wondering if my partner is getting bored with all this dry plot. But then in other cases when smut does happen I wonder if it's derailing the story.

Because if you imagine a movie where the characters just start screwing every other scene, it would not be a good movie. It would be a porno. And I always remember times when I was playing in group RPs and two players would go off and fuck, and everyone else is just rolling their eyes and watching the clock, waiting for them to wrap it up so we can get on with the plot.

But then imagine a couple is dating for months and they never have sex. Everyone would assume the guy is gay and the girl should start looking for someone else. In play-by-post, two days of game time take months to play out, so that's my dilemma.

I can extend this into the 'OOC planning' prequel as well. Too many times I've worked back and forth in the planning that when the actual IC story post comes, it dies due to being burned out on the planning and things feel 'too scripted'.

That said, one of the best erotic/smutty RP I have even been a part of was one where A scene was written up and the writers played off each other in character. Minimal planning, maximum interaction. The fact the story started with the characters already in bed led to the possible problem that the smut would be written too early and the story die out. But that didn't happen, and an amazing scenario was created over the three months of writing a couple weeks of RP time.

as I've gotten older ive definitely decreased writing erotic scenes by a ton, lol, it can be really fun to get your kinks out and satisfy those things, but my life and the relationship I have offline make it to where i think im a lot more into plot/chars now, since that erotic part isn't a dire need in my life. as a older teen i was rearing to go lol, now im an old man. I love a good slow burn, really makes the spicy scenes pop when it takes a while to get there and there's plenty of character tensions and frustrations. i love a good passionate romp oop

i have one smutty RP that i do with my partner, but, they are my partner so it hits different lol.

tho sometimes i feel like the smut scene can ruin the whole story, especially if it's a smut based rp and you or your partner aren't vibing. just defeats the purpose of writing at that point.

which is why now i just stick to the slow burn, or pure raw dark angst :)

I have put in my vote at a 50-50 because I didn't mind smut and story as a healthy mix because I looked at it from a standpoint of 'Everyone has smut' in the corner in some way to a degree. Which is true but I have experimented with others in the votes and choices as well and I don't mind the higher percentages of smut but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea so I can restrain and be balanced in the 50-50 area while trying to be open to everyone's taste.

100% depends on the story.

I'm open any combination of plot to erotica, though the range of indulgence for me is largely based on the setting. Original world and characters? Awesome fun times, but the characters need to develop a relationship before any smutty funtimes happen or it feels terribly hollow. ...Fandoms, though? I'm shameless. I'm already in love with the characters - and there is typically some great relationship material already there (I lean towards canon/canon) - so I'm willing to indulge more freely.

Just now I was listening to an old lecture from the 70s by this obscure Dutch guy named Hans Rookmaaker, and he drifted onto the topic of erotica, which I found kind of amusing in a quaint sort of way (apparently 70s literature was very nihilistic). But the punchline of his long story made me laugh, and then think...

Here's a transcript of what he was saying:

------------

I think one of the things that you OUGHT to read is pornography books. Because they tell you the truth. It's very interesting, if I would just think in my mind what is a pornography book, well, pornography book says that everything that counts is sex. So what you write is that men and women are jumping in bed just as they meet each other without all the social constraints and all that. They just go ahead, you see?

It's like in one of these pornography books that I didn't read but read about, it goes like this that the man is entering a women's convent, and within 10 minutes he is going around sexually with the abbess. Of course it's completely crazy, but it's beautiful...

Well, that is pornography. But one of the interesting thing about pornography books is that usually, it's not like that. Or it is like that, but after ten pages the problems begin. And at the end you see that everything is in a mess. These people know! They talk about the world...

I remember that I was once waiting, a long time, for a plane--I just had to change planes--at Chicago airport, so I went to the book shop there, and I looked into the little books. And of course there was quite a bit of these little pornography books. And so I didn't buy the book, I just stood there just reading it quickly, because I just... at the time I'm a quick reader.

So, well, it talked about a girl who went downtown New York to work in her uncle's shop, and then she falls through a hole in the street, and then she comes to the underworld. And that night she went through the most horrible experiences. The next morning, she finds her way back and she comes to the uncle in the shop. And the poor thing, what the uncle does of course is to rape her.

So, you can only say it in a very rough language, so I'll do it, but this was the last page of the book. So, the man was fucking her. And she said to her uncle, "This night I found something, that there's nothing worth living for". And the uncle answered, "You're right, but there's also nothing worth dying for" - "So what shall we do?" - "Well, just fuck on"

------------

How many RPs have I had where after 10 pages everything is a mess? But we just fuck on.

I'll just be honest. I love smut. I love writing smut. I love the sensational feeling it evokes and the imagery it inspires. I love sharing that with someone. Whether it's plot-driven or simply smutty fun. I love it. Don't judge me, I'm honest! <3 Winks Love you all.
Me too: I can't help it ...
