  • Hi there Guest. As a reminder - when you are updating/editing your threads in the Requests areas - it is sent to our approval queue to be checked against our site rules. It will take about 24 max to approve and post. Questions can be sent to Auntie Angel!
  • Hi there Guest! This message is to let you know that leadership is aware there is an error in the posting of badges - that the image links themselves are broken. Rei is working to move the items to a different img host, but it may take a little while for the transition to be complete.

Hey Umbranites!

After the whackadoodle situation from the past few days, I'm sure many of you have some questions. Hopefully this thread will alleviate any concerns or worries you may have about the site.

The Short Version:
  1. No, there are no plans to permanently close the site. I've heard this rumor has (understandably) been floating around, and I want to reaffirm for you all it simply isn't the case.
  2. No, there wasn't an attack on the site perpetrated by rogue internet hooligans. Another rumor I've heard. Considering how low-key Umbra has always been, I can't imagine why we'd have any enemies, but y'know. Internet. Either way, never happened.
  3. The site going down and the Discord server disappearing are not related. Both occurring at the same time was an unfortunate coincidence. For all those interested, we will be making a new Umbra Discord server for you all to join. We will update and link the server to the site when it is ready.

The Long Version:

For those of you with more nuanced questions, here's a little update on ya mans.

To anyone who has joined the site within the last few months, you may not know who I am (owner of the site) or have seen me around. This is due to the fact that I have been taking a quiet extended hiatus from Umbra. For the past few months, I have experienced severe mental health issues related to my anxiety, depression and ADHD. These issues have made it incredibly taxing for me to continue managing this site on a day to day basis, and that left all of the management to my amazing Umbra team. They have been wonderfully supportive during my time of difficulty, and I can't thank them enough.

The site going down (which was caused by a minor glitch in coding) forced me to return to the site before I was ready to do so. Not a terrible thing by any means, but it does leave me in a strange spot when it comes to what to do moving forward. You all deserve a present team, and unfortunately I cannot be there for you at this time.

Being an adult is fucking difficult. Life is fucking difficult. Umbra was always intended to be a safe haven for writers with rich and varied interests, and the last thing I want to do is take that away from anyone and cause more pain when we're all just trying to get through the day. I apologize for any stress you all experienced while the site was down, not knowing if you'd be able to contact your partners or reclaim your work. Please know that your writing experience has always been number #1 to me, and I will always do what I can to ensure you do not lose that.

So, what does all this mean for Umbra? Well, for right now, nothing. As I mentioned, there are no plans to close the site. I will be convening with our Umbra team to figure out how we'd all like to proceed. I will continue supporting the site to ensure you all have a safe and friendly space to keep on writing, even if I cannot fully be here for you all right now.

Another update will come soon, so please keep an eye on your notifications. If you took the time to read this, thank you. Immensely. This community's kindness and understanding has always been a source of pride for me. Umbra is lucky to have you all.

See you, space cowboy...
Nev

A big and sloppy thank you to the administrators of Black Dahlia, Fantastic, and Writer's Sanctum for housing some lost Umbranites and being so supportive while I sorted out the glitches. I remember a time when many roleplay admin were not so nice to one another, so the kindness has been greatly appreciated.
